Course overview

The planet is facing unprecedented multiple drivers of land use change, invasive species, and climate change; compounded by financial, social and governance challenges. Climate change, in particular enhanced rainfall variability and unpredictability, is causing social, economic, and environmental challenges where impacts are magnified by growing populations and limited adaptation opportunities.

As for all challenges, these also present opportunities and solutions to navigate these challenges through sustainable, equitable and just pathways. Business is an important agent for change towards sustainability as it can incubate innovation and lead to solutions for the most pressing problems of our time. We propose here a new localised, long-term, multi-actor capacity building approach, based on the iteration loop between education, research and innovation to navigate those most threatened by climate and environmental change.

This innovative, comprehensive 8-week University of York course, divided into 4 modules, delves into the core concepts underpinning sustainable business. Module 1 explores Environmental Sustainability – the principle concepts of Sustainability, Adaptation and Resilience. Module 2 introduces Environmental Science, Business & Society. Module 3 focuses on Environmental Management and Strategy and more. In Module 4, the course navigates Developing Sustainably and real-world case studies.
